Here goes the second attempt at writing this, as the first time was interrupted by a power cut when I was finishing my last sentance.

I'm making this guide based on reoccuring questions regarding the acquisition of good P2P programs. It will feature several P2P programs which I'll give a short explanation followed by an advantage and disadvantage list. This guide is far from finished, as I can only review the P2P programs that I have used. I encourage anybody to post and add and/or correct this guide based on their experiences. A Section is needed for Newsgroups for a start. That said, lets get to the main guide.

DC++ - http://www.dcpp.net/ or http://utrum.dyndns.org:8000/

DC++ is an excellent P2P program for rare files. It gives you a public hub list based on your public hub URL (one is provided when you download DC++). DC++ has several mods - a popular one is BCDC++ (see the second link above). Some servers have certain requirements such as the amount you have to share, the amount of upload slots you have to have open and the amount of other hubs you can be connected to.

Advantages

- Excellent resource for rare files you can't find anywhere else.
- Speeds are good if you get a good host (people usually have their connections specified in brackets before their name, so look out for [10mbit] or higher).

Disadvantages

- Slow speeds if your file is unpopular or not widely hosted.
- Some servers have requirements including how much you must share to enter.

Limewire - (Get Limewire Pro using torrents. Alternatively, www.limewire.com).

Limewire is your average P2P program. It contains an easy to use interface, and is good for an inexperienced pirate. For music, it can also be good for your experienced pirate. Usually offering good speeds, it can be a good program to resort to.

Advantages

- Usually provides good speeds.
- You aren't required to share.
- Easy to use interface.

Disadvantages

- Fake files are common.
- Doesn't cater to new movies or games very well.

Torrents - Popular torrent programs include BitComet (http://www.bitcomet.com/), Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) and µtorrent (www.utorrent.com) (Leftone). Popular sites to get torrents include www.torrentspy.com, www.isohunt.com, www.piratebay.org and http://www.torrents.to/ (www.piratebay.org) (Leftone).

Torrents are excellent for new movies, games, software and episodes of all flavours. You will often see such things being ripped first to torrents, and if they aren't, somebody will put them up onto torrents swiftly. Torrents are almost required for good pirate. They do come with their distinct disadvantages, however.

Advantages

- A plethora of new games and movies are available via torrents.
- You can have confidence in the fact that torrents rarely stop downloading. The speed may fluctuate, but if you leave it on all night, you'll get something done at least.
- Fairly easy to use.

Disadvantages

- Speeds can vary depending on the downloader/uploader ratio.
- Torrents can be fake (it's a good idea to read the comments on the torrent before using it)

FilePipe P2P - http://www.filepipe.org/

"FilePipe P2P is a good program, connecting to the Ares, FastTrack, Gnutella and OpenFt networks simultaneously (also adding the Torrent protocol in an upcoming patch)." ~ Aramanon.

DISCLAIMER: Leetnetwork.com and all its constituents (that includes Zim) do not promote piracy. The above guide is for the easy download of P2P programs, not the downloading of copyrighted material.

As I've said in the second paragraph of this guide, please do add to it. Credit will be given for any additions to the guide. Sections for other P2P programs are needed (Newsgroups, eMule, eDonkey, winMX, etc).

Hmm// hopefully this isnt off topic.. I am a torrent noob.. And am wondering where abouts someone would look for blockbuster movie torrents.. If they were hypothetically looking to Download such things..

If this is off topic then I shallt delete all above this line and replace it with that below.

Edit..
Question about speed settings and such.. I got a 1.6megabit connection and can apparently download a mb in 5.2 seconds. This was told to me during a speed test so i set my speeds in utorrent accordingly.
Yet now i am achieving an all mighty .3kb/s download rate that spiked all the way to 6kb/s :S

Do i just give it time? or should I change my speed setting from 2 megabits to 1 megabit

--------------------------------------------------------

Sweet guide guys, hopefully it can help a limewire nob like me.

Browse the websites listed in the FAQ. Torrentspy and Piratebay are both pretty good for movies.

Torrent download speed mainly depends on 2 variables; your download speed, and the seeder/leecher ratio. Try to pick torrents with lots of seeders and a low amount of leechers, although such torrents are rare. In all, try to pick torrents with decent S:L ratios. Other than that, it's a good idea to limit your upload. Upload can mean that download is decreased, and therefore it's sensible to limit it.

Thank you sir. I tried the one lefty posted for 30 minutes and all the links except a german one kept showing me nothing but anime or porn :P Torrentspy works nicely.

Went to bed with the screen saying the torrent would be done in a week
ANd it just finished 5 hours later telling me I have

DL 717mb ANd Uploaded at 135kb/s(just now) 1.9GB

Must i be so generous with my uploads? If i were limited on bandwidth that could be a serious problem. But I don't want to be restricted for leaching. Is there a reccomended DL to UL ratio, or does one just try to get it as high as possible.

I set my upload to 56k speeds of 5KB/s. I usually get about 250KB/s download in return. Fuck a ratio. Sites that demand ratios are fags too.

I do much the same, as I'm usually on multiple torrents and it takes too much away from my bandwidth.

alright.. sounds good.

Suddenly all my trackers in utorrent switched to offline (timed out)
I have a red arrow beside all my torrents, and when i tryed to open another it wouldnt find any peers or seeds.

This was working last night, then i exit and restart my computer today and it all goes to shit. though i read in a log this morning that i am unable to map my upnp port. i have to assume this is nortons fault. I would rather crash that program permanently than manually forward anything.

edit
Odd I drop my max global something or other to 200 to appease my router, I allow norton in all its glory to run un opposed, and then remembering the threatening email i had recieved from pathcom about users using fileshare programs all night (jokes on them i was playing darkeden) so i encrypted outgoing junk and am now running with all my trackers just fine, despite the fact that my upnp was unmapped once again. Too much shat between me and the internet.
