This all depends on what you consider rock.

If we're talking rockabilly, then of course the pioneer, Elvis Presley rules. But are we talking about rock and roll? Legends such as KISS and Pink Floyd? Glam metal rockstars such as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister?

I'll give you a vague, broad answer for your vague, broad question.

Look I'm just really picky with music, writing reviews for music is my part-time job so I have to be on top of things. It's just a natural reaction, if you're gonna stem rock as being every possible thing under that umbrella...then I'd easily have to say Rich Kids on LSD being the best rock band ever.

Hey kid how about you shut up. Rock is a very broad umbrella and I explained why the fuck I analyze it and break it down like I do. It's not hard to answer the question, except when you're used to it being asked a different way. God munch on my nuts or something. Usually rock doesn't include punk when generalised like that.

Not all punk is called punk rock.

I think Owen's trying to say that most people here aren't especially enamoured by popular culture anyway, and such people tend to enjoy a particular band for the music it creates, rather than the category it adheres to. Popular culture seems to like specific genres, regardless of individual bands (within reason, of course :p).

Of course, I could be reading too much into what he said, but that's what I think, anyway.

I know what you mean, I listen to a band for the music. It's just I can't think of rock as something in general cuz a lot of people would shit a brick if you lumped Queen in the same category as say Fall Out Boy. As for pop culture, they aren't specific enough...you have guys like Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy being called "emo", when they're nothing close the genre of emo. The media just bastardizes everything until it becomes a profit.

i didnt say all punk i just said punk rock which would cover both punk and rock as the genre title says. Metal is metal its different from rock dont ask me how but it is im sure somone knows. alternative is in rock its called Alternative Rock theres alternative everything. even Alternative Metal.

beatles win hands down.

doesn't mean that all the other candidates of this thread aren't amazing in their own way though.

I agree with your first statment. Listening to a band for the music and not for what they are (such as a specific genre or becuze their mainstream or not) is the way it should be.

but why is queen not in the same catergory as fallout boy.
theyre both rock theyre just two different sub catergories. Thats why they have sub catergories. to seperate the detailed differences to the bands. but wtfx it shouldnt matter just like a band cuz they sound good not cuz they popular or not.

as for me i dont understand half the catergories they have i just use the baisic ones. rock metal rap country jazz and pop.

buddy, it wasn't vague. I said "rock". rock n roll and rock are two different things. Rock N Roll is Elvis and the 50s and some of the early to mid 60s music. Rock is generally the late 60s to now. People like Eric Clapton, The Beatles, The Greatful Dead, and the Rolling Stones helped interpet rock n roll to rock. Of course, bands now-a-days aren't even rock, they are power chord music, but people still consider it rock. When I said rock, I meant ROCK, you know, that stuff that the Bealtes, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, and all those other amazing people produce.

zomg! pink floyd owns yes ^^ but i likez led zeppelin. the beatles would have to be my second choice though, definatley. they set the stage as you guys said. once you get up to the single greatest rock band of all time though, it gets to be solely opinion =)

no thier not leetman. rock and roll is just and older term that not many people use anymore cuz people are lazy and shortened it. the main difference between Eric Clapton and Elvis is technology and time period. and what do you mean by power chord music? metal? otherwise it still is rock. just same difference as before. technology makes more possibilities.

What do I mean by power chord music? I mean bands like panic at the disco and nickel back that make a song only by power chords. Metal isn't really power chords, it's bar chord configuratons and weird pentatonic runs. (I play guitar ftw)

P!ATD is a lot more thn power chords. re yout ht deaf you can't hear the electronica? The second half of their album draws tons of 30's influence: There's harps, harpischords,
cello... a plethora of classical instruments. And there's a lot of metal that are power chords, they just throw in fills and solos. Nickelback I don't listen to cuz I can't stand the fucker's voice, but yeah. And yeah, rock and rock 'n' roll are the same thing. Any high school music history course teaches you that.

Take your typical punk riff. That's a power chord. Metal has them too, just metal is known more for being melodic. That's not to say there's not a lot of melodic punk. Punk just tends to use more chord progression to build up a song rather than using technicality. Metal is more theatric and epic and tends to use that to build a foundation on. And honestly I don't know the difference between a bar chord and a power chord, but it's easy to tell that metal uses power chords. Just use your ears.

Well thank you but my two buddies who are both supposed to be guitarists for the band were trying to make had already told me what a power chord is. a power chord is baisically when you hold more than 2 or 3 strings down as you play. that would not be a determining factor for me when deciding genres. maybe the amouts of powerchords but to my ears i cant tell the difference. i would have to say im a little tone deaf. good thing i play the drums eh lol.

Noooo nooo =). A power chord is a root note and it's 5th. EX: A5
Punk music is generally power chords. Like a lot of sum41 and blink 182s stuff. Most people just add distortion to power chords and bang them, and then maybe hit a bar chord bass note and slide some.. these are the guitar noobs. Any guitarist who just makes a song soley out of power chords and then maybe had a 5 second 4 notes pentatnoic scale is not a good guitarist. That doesn't always mean the musik sux though, I do enjoy some power chord bands. Also, P!ATD sux, no matter what. The song writer is a dumb@$$. Yes, metal does have power chords but the intelligent ones do other stuff too.

Man power chords has nothing to with beinga "guitar noob". Writing music is about how good it sounds, not how technical it is. I've heard plenty of technicaly guitar playing that sucked more than power chord songs.

definately dood, but what I meant is that it's completely pathetic to hit a series of power chords over and over again. Every power chord has been hit, and it's getting old seeing all of these new bands playing the same thing but just tweaking it up with a few different notes and adding 9ths to chords.

lol pointer and ring finger.. or pinky i suppose. hold one fret on a string and then one string up hold 2 frets down.. the notes sound good when hit simultaneuously. Then crank up distortion and go duh na na na na da na na. and repeat

Songs comprised entirely of power chords are generally considered NOOB because it is EASY for NOOBS to grab a guitar and reproduce it. Blink 182.. uh all the smallthings.. would be an example.

uh some bands combine skill and power chords such as metallica master of puppets.. musc of that song is simple power chords.. strummed at light speed with no cross picking.. taking away much of the noobness

Yeah I agree with the guy above me. You can't just say it's not music because you don't like it. Metalcore, punk, hardcore, EMO, and SCREAMO are actually my favorite styles. Most of today's emo is actually just pop-punk anyways. There's nothing different between Fall Out Boy and blink- 182 except for the lyrics mostly. The fashion and hair of a band doesn't determine their music. Yes, I look emo. Yes I sing in a screamo band. But I also sing a metalcore band and a black metal band. Sure I look out of place, but I love doing it. And in the end that's all that really matters when a band wants to play their music.

Agreed.

I just noticed it, but bloodvst you said "I don't know the differnce between a power chord and a bar chord"
Well~

A barchord is a powerchord with some higher sounding notes to make to make the power chord sound like a regular chord. It's also an alternative way of doing chords and sounds better in some situations. If you don't get what I mean, then here are some examples:
Dani California by The chili Peppers (the rhythem guitar) is a Am, G, Dm bar chord progression.
Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2) By Pink Floyd... the chord right after the first few words is a Dm bar chord. bar chords are good for that funky type of sound.

I would have to say the best rock band are The Beatles. But my favorite is Pink Floyd. With my favorite song being Point me at the Sky.

Beatles sux. Sure they had some good songs but a lot of their shit was whack. Hell a lot of it i wouldn't even consider rock.

Any notion of "the greatest" is purely subjective, there is no across-the-board correct answer. One can only define one's personal opinion.
