Program Shortcut?

Hey, well its annoying always locating my frequently used programs on my desktop and having to minimize to find them, so i was wondering if there was like a shortcut to open it? I know if u right click -> properties you can set a hotkey, but i dont want to have to ctl+alt+p or w/e i set it to, like firefox, to open a new window is ctrl+n, so i want to be able to press ctrl+n to bring up my Firefox even though its not initally open, any suggestions/programs you know of? thanks.
